Sacraments

The following Catholic Sacraments are available:

Baptism

Baptism is usually a sacrament for infants. The usual time is a few months after birth as children and parents begin to develop together and the practise of the Catholic faith is developed. Contact the parish to organise.

First Holy Communion

First Holy Communion is celebrated for children year 3, with a connection to St Winefride’s, South Wimbledon Parish. This Sacrament is a parish responsibility and is strengthened by the high quality RE teaching in the schools. Confession or Reconciliation is part of the preparation for first Holy Communion and available at 11 on Saturday mornings.

Confirmation

Confirmation is for the young adults in year 8. The date depends on the availability of the Bishop or Bishop’s delegate. The preparation is constantly under review and may include a day away. Confirmation builds on a living and active faith, for some young people year 8 may not be an appropriate time if their practice has discontinued. Confirmation for adults, often necessary for marriage, is celebrated as part of the Easter Vigil after a suitable preparation. Contact the parish for further information.

Marriage

Between two Catholics or a Catholic and a non Catholic can be arranged with the help of the Parish Priest even if the couple are marrying in another Church. Catholics are expected to marry in a Church, if the marriage has taken place in a registry office a ceremony of Convalidation (commonly called a blessing) is needed for the marriage to be regarded as a valid sacrament. Couples need to provide evidence of baptism (a recent copy of the baptism certificate is needed) and that they are free to marry. If marrying in St Winefride’s the local registrar needs to be consulted. The Parish can provide an organist and florist.

Marriages are celebrated all over the world and each is special for the couple. Preparation for the sacrament or ceremony is necessary for legal and spiritual reasons and couples should try and make contact with the parish at least 6 months beforehand.

Anointing of the sick

Anointing of the sick is a sacrament of strengthening. It forms a part of the idea of the “last rites’ together with Confession and the reception of Communion. The Church recognises that this is usually not possible with the high quality of medical care meaning a patient close to death is often in a sedated state to reduce their suffering.

Anointing of the sick is nearest to the idea of conscious active participation which the church teaches as appropriate for the reception of the sacraments.

It takes place in Advent and Lent, or on request. This is a sacrament of strengthening intended for the sick, rather than the dying. Hospital chaplains will also use this sacrament even if there is no danger of death.

Ordination

This is for those who feel called to the priesthood or religious life. Please see the parish priest or respond to one of the notices on the board.
